Editing Pages

Creating New Pages

In a wiki, pages are usually linked to gether. To create a new page, edit an already existing page and add a link to the page you want to create. Then click on the created link, and this will create your new page and allows you to edit it! For example, I created a sandbox page by putting [[Sandbox]] here and then clicking on the created link (Sandbox).

Formatting

Check this table for a quick help on formatting text in this wiki: Most Frequent Wiki Markup.

Links

  • Internal Links: To link to a page in the wiki use [[PAGE_NAME]]. For example, [[Main Page]] takes you to the Main Page.
  • External Links: ' External links are in the form [http://www.example.org link name] (resulting in link name), with the link name separated from the URL by a space. Links without link names will be numbered: [http://www.example.org] becomes [1]. Links with no square brackets will be displayed in their entirety: http://www.example.org .

Signing Your Text

  • You can sign your text with ~~~ which gives you your signature; in my case it would be: Trident.
  • You can also date it with ~~~~, which gives you something like: Trident 00:52, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
  • If you just need the date, go with ~~~~~: 00:52, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

No Formatting

If you want to write something and you don't want it to be formatted by the wiki, put it in <nowiki>...</nowiki>.

Shortcuts

If you prefer using keyboard instead of clicking on different buttons with your mouse, there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that you can use:

  • alt-e lets you edit the page you are visiting
  • alt-s saves the page you are editing
  • alt-p shows you a preview of the page you are editing

I assume on Mac you need to press the apple-key instead of Alt.

Uploading Files

To put a file in a page, follow these steps:

  1. First upload the file using the Upload file link of the toolbox menu on the left.
    • Give it a name that uniquely defines the file.
  2. Use [[Image:FILE_NAME]] in your page to link to the file. For example, Image:Sample.pdf is a link to a file that I uploaded.
  3. You can also link to the file's description page by [[:Image:FILE_NAME]]. This way, you can also give it a different name like My Sample File.

You can always visit the list of files and update them (if you like) from the same Upload file link.

Sidebar Menu

The sidebar menu (navigation menu) is also a wiki page and can be edited (edit it here: MediaWiki:Sidebar). For a documentation on how to edit this page see MidiaWiki Navigation Bar Manual.
